FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is ProShield and how does it work?
ProShield is a UV-cured urethane gel that instantly protects and repairs horses’ hooves in all environments. When activated with the N’Dura Hoof LED Light, ProShield’s proprietary monomers form covalent bonds, creating a strong web of cross-linked adhesive polymers which then harden and secure to the natural hoof surface. The result is a durable, yet breathable coating that lasts for six weeks.
What technology was used to formulate ProShield?
ProShield’s patent-pending formula was developed using both dental adhesive and nail salon gel technologies.
How is ProShield different from other products on the market?
ProShield is the first ever UV cured urethane gel for protecting and repairing horses hooves:
- Ready to use - no mixing or preparation required
- Cures in 30 seconds
- Lasts for 6+ weeks - eliminates the need to reapply in between farrier services
- Safe - odorless, containing no toxic or unsafe chemicals, including formaldehyde, toluene or solvents
What is ProShield used for?
ProShield provides a strong, protective coating to the outer hoof wall. It prevents and repairs common hoof issues:
- Prevents and repairs cracks, chips and splits
- Nail holes - seals out bacteria and prevents cracking
- Waterproof barrier - helps maintain hoof's natural moisture balance while allowing the hoof to breathe and flex naturally
How does the N’Dura Hoof LED Light cure ProShield?
ProShield contains photoinitiators that react to the N’Dura Hoof LED Light, causing ProShield to harden and adhere to the hoof surface. This process gives off a brief heat sensation. While this heat sensation is perfectly safe for the exterior hoof wall, ProShield should not be applied to the coronet band or frog.
Why do I have to use the N’Dura Hoof LED Light to cure ProShield?
Not all LED lights are the same. The N’Dura Hoof LED Light’s output was specifically designed to cure ProShield. The Light’s output is a combination of the number of LED bulbs, their wavelength and intensity, and the distance from the light to the hoof when curing. This combination was formulated to activate ProShield’s proprietary photoinitiators. Using another light that does not have this specific combination may cause under or over curing of ProShield and will not guarantee its optimum performance.
How many hooves does one can treat?
One can of ProShield should cover at least 16 hooves. If using ProShield on all 4 hooves every 6 weeks, it should last 6 months.
How far away from the hoof should I hold the LED Light when curing?
The ideal distance is approximately 1/2 inch from the hoof.
Why do I need to keep ProShield away from light?
ProShield has photoinitiators that react to UV light, causing it to cure and harden. Keep the ProShield can closed at all times when not in use.
Will sunlight also cure ProShield?
Yes. While you will get the best results by using the N'Dura Hoof LED Light, sunlight will also cure it.
How do I remove ProShield from the hoof?

How do I clean up uncured ProShield?
You can wipe away any uncured ProShield from the hoof, can, etc. with acetone.

Can ProShield be affected by ammonia, manure or urine?
No, ProShield provides bulletproof protection and can only be removed by filing it off or growing it out.
How does hot or cold weather affect ProShield?
ProShield may become a little thicker or thinner, depending on the weather, but that will not affect its cure time or durability.
Can I drive a horseshoe nail through ProShield?
No, it may weaken the ProShield coating. You CAN apply ProShield OVER nails to help strengthen and keep them secured to the hoof.
Will filing it damage or dull my rasp?
